Afreen

To a person from the Indian subcontinent the word Afreen evokes the memory of late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s mellifluous rendition Afreen, Afreen from the mid 90’s, or the more recent Coke Studio edition featuring his nephew Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Momina Mustehsan.

Afreen is a word with etymological roots in several languages – Arabic (most powerful rose), Egyptian (gem), Farsi / Persian (moonlight), Finnish (exquisite), Turkish (a term of encouragement for doing something good) and Urdu (delightful and elegant).

Across languages and cultures, though, the term refers to beauty beyond praise – something of undeniable and undefinable allure.
